Norway’s stellar indie label Sellout! and Poule d’Or teamed up for an all new series of mixtapes. Each month, a member of the extended Sellout! Music family will be putting together a fresh mix and share it with the general public. In a time where most things in life come with strings attached or at least a tracking link, this mixtape series is the proxy server to your average Wednesday night.
First off the roll is Norwegian producer and multi talent Spiny Norman – who will also have an EP out on Sellout next month. This mix though will be among the finest 49 minutes you will probably have spent today: a marvelous collection of dreamy and dancey electronic pop tracks, ranging from 1980s vintages to ones that only just came out. Spiny says his mix “is mostly comprised of tracks from what is in my opinion, three very important groups of electronic musicians. There are the pioneers of the early eighties, the techno wizards who pushed their humble gear to the limits and the synthesists of the present who elegantly capture and channel the heart and soul of both these other groups.”
It is Spiny Norman’s selection that really puts the cats among the mixtape-pigeons, with stellar picks ranging from 1980s Tangerine Dream and Yellow Magic Orchestra to 1990s Caz and Hallucinogen and the rather recent Neon Indian. And then there is the way he managed to put a narrative into those 49 minutes, across genres and decades of styles and music. Chapeau. Let Spiny Norman take you for a ride. Team Poule says, stay relaxed – and bring your chairs into an upright position. hear the mix after the jump
What a year it has been already and we are not even 8 weeks in yet. And here comes German duo VIMES with new tracks like they are cotton candy. VIMES only just released their debut LP going by the impeccable name of Nights in Limbo on Berlin’s legendary Humming Records. Attached below is their latest sweet piece: Tuem. A spherical dance pop track that makes your knees week and shoulders bounce like an 80s fitness coach – what more could you ask for really. A tour you say? Sure thing. The team is playing all relevant parts of Germany in March: from obvious stages in Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg to less obvious ones in Kassel, Duisburg and Hannover, all dates here. Team Poule says, they mean business.
Excited like a baby panda in snow for this one. On the back of a solo tour, Sway Clarke comes home with this mad single of a track: Nü L.A. – a Poule d’Or exclusive and one that will make Kanye get all kanye. Nü L.A. is a perfect mix of the acoustic folk’ish vibes that are well known to be up Sway’s sleeves and a straight out banging development that seems to be taking place out of nowhere – all strapped together by this voice. A curve ball of a song.
Now, if you find yourself saying, yeah, I can get down to this, you are in luck! The man, the legend Sway Clarke is readying the release of a new mixtape as we speak – out in the wild in no less than two weeks. Keep your eyes open for that. Team Poule says, mind blown.
Oh Canada! There must be fairy dust in your maple sirup. Vancouver quartet The Zolas offer one of the more driving ends on the indie pop spectrum. They have been at it since 2009 and just announced the release of an all new album: Swoone will be out March 4th on Light Organ Records. Attached below is the stellar tasting Get Dark.
It just doesn’t stop there. These days they are busy touring the relevant parts of Europe. February 11th sees them stopping in Hamburg at the shiny new Nochtwache. As a regular follower of Poule d’Or you are once again ahead of the competition because we managed to get our feathers on not one but 2×2 tickets for the occasion, waiting to be yours. All you need to do is put in a comment below and keep your fingers crossed that the mighty wheel of fortune at our headquarters will pick your name out of the hat. The winners will be picked Tuesday, Feb 9th at 7pm CET sharp.
Now, with over six years of experience it is safe to assume The Zolas know their ways quite well, which makes this gig one not to miss in this year of 2016 – Team Poule is properly excited.
Actually proud as a little penguin for this premiere. Attached below you find the new video by Los Angeles based ensemble Brett – the group of four gentlemen pictured above. Brett sport an intriguing mix of 80s pop vibes and dreamy spherical synths that just make you want to hop in your Testarossa and ride off into the sunset. The video now comes in all hot and fresh from Sweden, by the very talented Jonas Börjesson: a fuzzy, sort of tripping, psychedelic cascade of colours that – like a good video should – beautifully enhances the whole artistic experience of the music itself.
On Account Of Your Love is off Brett’s last EP which is out on Chill Mega Chill. They are busy finishing their next release which will be out on the legendary Cascine label in March, with the first single to be out Tuesday next week, Feb 9th. Team Poule seriously approves of this.
Tunes smooth as silk coming in from Los Angeles married couple Freedom Fry, just out via KCRW. They are really pulling off their American/French roots on this one, nicely playing the double entendre on Just Say/Je sais the words. It is just an all around nice song that puts you in a good mood. Just type Freedom Fry in that Spotify search bar, tap that green shuffle button and worry no more, life problems: solved. Team Poule says, anytime, Freedom Fries.
