Sudbury, Ontario is a lovely place – not sure if you are an avid reader of the local newspaper Sudbury Star but surely you didn’t miss those ads these guys bought in a weekend edition last month. Featuring them riding their quad bikes through the woods. Topless. Expectedly, the lads in The Almighty Rhombus swear those allegations are false. Who wouldn’t!
Now, maybe I made part of that up. However, the self-proclaimed “supergroup” has released a fantastic EP: packed with pure and straight forward pop rock – with a sort of college boy’esque Chester French feel to it. Attached is the great opener She Didn’t Want Me. Snag the entire EP on bandcamp. They are also busy laying finishing touches on their debut full-length album which will be out this summer – it’s a win-win.
Our favorite Danish electro-swag duo Belle Ville spent the winter writing, recording, producing new songs. Their new EP Inside Outside has already hit the markets with five all new tracks, all exceptionally well produced by Kirk, smooth and just a pleasure to listen to. Line’s crystal vocals are the icing on that Belle Ville cake.
Attached is Motionless, the EP’s opener. Check the horns on that one! And hey – if you happen to be in the Copenhagen this Friday – Belle Ville are supporting Lemaitre at KB18. Inside Outside is out now, on iTunes.
Remember that “controversial” video by Sandra Kolstad? I bet you do. And while her new album is pretty amazing, it’s her live shows that make the difference. She has been touring the US and Canada for the last couple of weeks and next week her flying circus is gonna stop in the old country again: playing Hamburg‘s Astra Stube on Tuesday, April 2nd. What better way to start a four-day week after Easter!?
As always, Poule d’Or readers are in luck. Comment on this post for 2×2 tickets for the Astra Stube gig. Make sure you use an email address where we can reach you (obviously). Submissions close Tuesday 15h00. Run Away.
UPDATE: Just learned that Justin Bieber is in town the same day – sorry Sandra. #bieberfever
Been meaning to write something about Copenhagen’s Halasan Bazar for some time – so NOW that they released a new video for their great single Sometimes Happy Sometimes Sad which has been around for a while, now maybe NOW is the time. Part of the reason I semi dropped the ball on them is their name. Halasan Bazar. Bazar – ok. But Halasan, sounds like medicine or something. Let me hear that cough? Better take two Halasans.
Thanks to the Googler though – I learn that Halasan is some sort of yoga exercise: Lie on your back, arms alongside (step one), raise legs an in Sarvangasan (you may take help of hands on the hips – obviously), then lower them overhead, knees straight, ankles stretched, toes pointed and touching the ground (step two – got it?), arms stay on ground as in the beginning, palms on the ground, the posture resembles the shape of a plough. Well, and look at those benefits!! Makes the spine flexible, creates energy (!!!), and blood of the muscles of the back. Aids the functioning of the thyroid and thymus glands thus helping retain the individual’s youthful physical characteristics for a longer period. Sounds like a fair deal to me. I’ll leave that one with you.
But while you’re at it (the Sarvangasan) – hit play on that video above. Which is a bit.. I don’t know. Imagine The Count on acid. Or something. They also have a great album coming out, Space Junk hits stores April 2nd via Crash Symbols. Peace out.
Or actually speaking of music videos, did you catch that new Foals video?! Obviously on a slightly higher budget, but oh my. EPIC.
Fresh new tunes coming our way from the cold North that is Finland. Aves are getting their ducks in a row to release their debut album in May. This is Elise, the first duck single. All fresh and warm and smooth, definitely ready for spring. Elise is out now – on the bandcamp.
Paris’ beautiful pineapple lovers Duellum released a new EP entitled Drift last month. Sounds like a movie starring Paul Walker or RyGo. But it doesn’t – Drift carries four fantastic indie pop tracks, really easy and fun to listen to. Great rhythm, great mood. Genuinely can’t wait for spring any longer, this whole snow and cold business needs to stop. Now.
Attached is the trademark opener The ISLD – but also catch the electronics-driven Nothing But Noise. Great EP, Drift is out now on iTunes and everywhere. I suggest you also try and catch them live – Team Poule was fortunate enough to see a rare acoustic set by the quartet: pure bliss. They are playing Le Baron in Paris, April 3rd. Also read this great interview our friends at Le Charivari did with them.
