Velocity Bird are a four men ensemble from France – where the naked ladies dance and they might as well do it to their music because Velocity Bird really are pretty special, as in: really good. La groupe formed in 2009 but they only recently popped up on the Poule’s radar. About time you’d think. They just released a new EP entitled Panorama. Four songs on repeat here at the Poule d’Or headquarters: pure, energetic upbeat pop music that has you bouncing your head like a bird – HA see what I did there.

Attached is This Tale – the Poule’s favorite track. Listen to the entire EP on their Soundcloud.

London’s own Get People are prepping a new EP for the upcoming summertime (in the Northern hemisphere) – this is the first single off of it. Can’t really wait to hear a full album from them. But they just keep doing EPs. Oh well, if they’re all as good as this – be my guest. Also catch them for free on Poule d’Or 8 and 9.

Here is a lovely surprise out of the Poule’s inbox: indie pop professors Chester French! The Harvard alumni released a highly (mainstream media) acclaimed debut album a couple years ago on Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak. It actually IS really good! Rumor has it they are readying a new album for release next month. They sound a bit like an early morning version of MGMT, really into it.

Remember 1997? Neither do I. Here is what we missed: Bill Clinton is inaugurated for his second term, blockbuster Titanic premieres in the US, divorce becomes legal in Ireland, the Spice Girls are breaking through, the first Harry Potter novel is published and Steve Jobs returns to a financially troubled Apple Computers. Quite the year.

So here come Saint Motel with “sort of a loving ode to the friendships forged in the Heaven’s Gate cult” singing

I’ve made so many new friends. With open arms they let me in. They say they’ll be with me ‘till the end. They say they’ll stay through thick and thin. And it’s gonna happen in 1997.

The Heaven’s Gate cult, for those unaware, was a UFO religion most famous for its mass suicide in March 1997 in order to reach an alien space craft which they believed was following the Comet Hale-Bopp. Some fucked up shit, right there, wrapped into great tunes.

The Poule investigated and asked their singer and pianist A/J to make sense of this: “I can remember being a little kid and just being fascinated by them. I was also really young back then and the thought of beaming up to a traveling comet that would become an interstellar spaceship sounded like a dream come true. I was also a bit of a loner back then, so I could kinda understand the lure of friendship and another world…”. Saint Motel are up to something, keep an eye on them.

Mexico City/ Boston-based I Can Chase Dragons! released the second song off their his debut album Expansión – which is out for free on bandcamp. Warm beats, indie pop feeling, provides a nice soundtrack to summer nights spent under the clear sky. Get it.
