Craft Spells-offspring Hibou released a brilliant EP titled Dunes. Five tracks with driving dreamy riffs. Gotta talk about the elephant in the room here though: totally sounds like Beach Fossils. Which is a good thing because Hibou sounds really great. Maybe better even – making Dunes both rad and new.
Best thing is, the entire EP is up on bandcamp, for free. Hibou also shared his track Glow for the 11th Poule d’Or compilation last month, here. Attached is Motion, swoon away.
Toronto’s remarkable Nightbox are busily touring the United States with this band called Dragonette.. like, right now! The group has a debut album lined up for release this winter and spend the time til that show goes down road tripping the world, playing gigs, searching for kicks. Sounds like a hoot! Catch them in New York (June 24), Boston (June 25), Toronto (August 3), San Francisco (August 14) and on three gigs in Los Angeles starting August 17 – this is just a tiny selection, there a loads more dates. Find them all here.
Attached is their latest offering Utopia.
Magnificent new single by Rainy Milo, Deal Me Briefly is about as smooth as it gets on a breezy summer night. Produced by the multi-talented Chet Faker. And Miss Milo by the way: 17 years old. How about that.
Here is a big one for you. Produced by the lads usually working with Alt-J, Darwin Deez or The Temper Trap. This is serious music. Josef Salvat hails from Australia – or the UK, it’s a mystery! But either way, he has the hearts of a hustler, according to himself that is.
His debut This Life should be out July 5th on our favorite label Humming Records/Rough Trade. Probably gonna sound as crisp as this bit.
So, I always had a keen interest in Jazz and Soul music but it’s such a giant and diverse genre that it’s somewhat overwhelming and difficult finding a good entry point. So then I was really pleased when I walked into a Seattleite-run coffee shop in Poznan in Poland a couple of weeks ago and ended up spending too much time there chatting with owner Erik.
Unlike this little amateur-run music blog, Erik did know a lot about Jazz and Soul and tipped me off to Charles Bradley – who was born in 1948 growing up in the Brooklyn of the 50s. This year he released his second album Victim Of Love on Daptone Records. You don’t need to know much about music to fall for this record, it’s so pure and passionate, absolutely amazing. Hat-tip to Big Foot Coffee in Poznan. Attached is the trademark You Put The Flame On It. And if you are like me – which I hope you’re not – take this as your entry point.
Also, Europeans, we are in luck: Charles Bradley and his band are currently on tour playing Copenhagen tonight (June 17), Grünspan in Hamburg on Wednesday (June 19) and Berlin on the 26th among others. There are loads of dates and festivals throughout the year, find all of them here. See this man!
Bradford’s ecstatic Hourglass Sea rolled another big one – Another World is hot wie Frittenfett. Right in that Hudson Mohawke vein.
