j-koplowitzThis five track EP has easily dominated my iTunes playlists these past few days. It’s very nice to listen to, instantly putting you in a great mood. Which is a noble accomplishment when you’re busy boxing life, moving house, to an all new Poule HQ. Funny enough, San Francisco by way of Seattle’s J. Koplowitz has created this very nice mix of vintage west coast funk and modern electronic, ambient vibes with “the joys of moving to a new city” in mind. Works for me.

And at the same time, [tweetable hashtag=”#jkoplowitz #pouledor”]Doesn’t Groove Like Me sounds like something that was released on Stones Throw[/tweetable]. But it wasn’t (yet) – mind you. Instead, the EP is up for a warm hand shake over at bandcamp. Now and if you think this all sounds somewhat familiar but not at all, you are right onto something. Mr. Koplowitz was part of the great ensemble Beat Connection, one of Team Poule’s favorites in the last couple of years.

So but let’s not get lost in the past, attached is the great opener My Satisfaction. Very hard picking one song out of the five. This Is California for instance does sound like it’s Dam-Funk on there. Doesn’t Groove Like Me is utterly brilliant and yours through bandcamp.

sway_2Here comes another hot one by Sway Clarke, the man, the legend, pictured above (with head this time – you know who you are). Being Canadian, he politely claims he doesn’t need much – but mind you, the devil is the details here. Make sure you hit play, and listen. Swayski Beat does have an EP in the making, so look out for more smoothness to come.

CPH:DOX 2013 – November 7-17

cph-doxCPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, first started in 2003 and has since become the single largest documentary film festival in Scandinavia. So, with big excitement Team Poule received an invitation to attend this year’s festival starting tomorrow, November 7th to 17th. And what better way to spend rainy days in November than watching movies? More than 200 films will be screened over the course of 11 days and naturally it’s the music-related films that tickle the Poule’s plumage most.

Now, obviously we don’t know two things about making films but we do know when we have a good time watching one. And the line-up really is amazing and very diverse this year: from Snoop Dogg becoming Snoop Lion and Angolan Death Metal bands over Napster’s rise and fall to Serbian brass band culture.

From Louise Hopper comes a great documentary Attenborough and Björk: The Nature of Music about the BBC’s iconic broadcaster and naturalist meeting with Björk. Over the course of 47 minutes they discuss where and how music, technology and nature intersect, about the structural, mathematical beauty connecting musical harmonies, mineral crystals and oceanic waves. Say what you want about Björk’s music but her approach to Biophilia really is astonishing. It’a a great experience watching the two exchanging their views.

Another great film is Good Ol’ Freda by Ryan White about Freda Kelly who was the Beatles secretary for 11 years, throughout their whole career. For the first time she tells her side of the story, how she became secretary only 17 years old, along with great memories and gives a new perspective on arguably the most influential band of the last century.

If you happen to be in Copenhagen, go and see a couple of these great documentaries. And this is just the music section – there are loads more.

turtleThis hazy fella up there is Mr. Jon Cooper from Glasgow, up in Britain. He goes by the name of Turtle but is much less flashy and LA than the lad from HBO’s Entourage. However, listening to Who Knows he totally sounds like someone with a great album. Luckily there is an EP to be released soon and it actually IS brilliant. Keep an eye on this Turtle.

encoreNo idea who what an A.V.I.A is but I do know that Versailles Encore striked again and that these fine tunes below saved the day at Poule HQ. Encore – best band of 2013!

jungleDid you watch this video for Jungle’s first single? Or this one for their last single? They mean business. Still gonna bring the heat. Here is Jungle‘s latest offering, Lucky I Got What I Want, as fresh as the last ones. Super excited to hear an LP from this team.
