Get to know: Audio Blackmail

Audio Blackmail are Emily Pike (vocals) and Craig Cheong (guitars, bass, drums & keys). Together they make what you would call pop music with rock and also electronic influences. They are part of the huge Australian music community Triple J Unearthed, like Alpine or RÜFÜS who both shared tracks for Poule d’Or 5. Here is a little interview the Poule has conducted with Emily, so hit the play button and get to know Audio Blackmail:

Where are you from?

We’re both from all over really! I was born in Tasmania but grew up in Papua New Guinea & Cairns (tropical north of Australia). Craig was born in Melbourne but grew up in Newcastle (north of Sydney). His parents are originally from Guyana in South America . We both live in Sydney! [continue reading…]

Astonishing debut album coming from Wes Doyle’s bedroom in Madison, Wisconsin. Extra Colors contains sugar sweet bedroom lo-fi pop; inevitably reminded the Poule of Wild Nothing. And the best thing, Extra Colors is totally free : grab it on bandcamp or his website.

Don’t sleep on the magnificent remix of RÜFÜS’ We Left by Distorted Disco founder and musical mastermind Germany Germany:

RÜFÜS – We Left (Germany Germany remix)

Ever since Ice Cream Shout shared their wonderful track for the fifth Poule d’Or compilation, the Poule has been paying a bit more attention to the Japanese music scene. While everyone seems to think of Karaoke madness immediately, there are some super fresh bands to discover. Like Hotel Mexico for instance. Six Kyoto-natives who engage in sometimes rocky sometimes electronic always fresh lo-fi with a very special Japanese flavour to it – absolutely loving it. It’s Twinkle and 2nd Floor is from their brilliant and sold out debut album His Jeweled Letter Box – it’s up on Spotify though, check it out. You can also follow them on twitter although that might raise more questions than it answers.

This particular track has been the epic opener of the fifth Poule d’Or compilation so it may not be redhot new, but I feel like it deserves its own post. RÜFÜS are three young Sydney vagabonds with Scandinavian roots who make music they describe as “a dancefolkpopindienuchillwave silenced explosion”. En tout cas, We Left is one of the freshest songs the Poule’s heard all year and I’m proud that they wanted to be a part of Poule d’Or.

They are just mastering their debut EP which should be out within the next few weeks. Something to look forward to!
