Recently stumbled upon My Friend Wallis‘ lovely tunes and was intrigued to find out more. Turns out that the girl behind it, Crystal Dorval, hails from British Columbia, Canada. Who could have seen that coming?! My Friend Wallis is one of her older projects and produces highly enjoyable indiepop with a tropical twist. A brilliant EP entitled When The Blue Turned Yellow is available on bandcamp which is well worth the purchase. On her latest project DAD Crystal produces a little more blurry bedroom-type lo-fi shoegaze.

What’s the last thing you ate?

Steamed broccoli with cheese on it.

How do you record your music?

I have been recording a lot of different ways over the past couple years. In studios, in friends’ living rooms, in my bedroom, on computers, on cassette recorders, even on my cell phone! Though I haven’t released any of the cell phone recordings.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Other music definitely. Being outside on nice days always inspires me. It’s like I just want to make a soundtrack for the day. As for lyrics, everyday I go outside and walk around, I get ideas. When I try to process the world and life and everything, I get confused about it, so I try to figure it out through writing.

What would be the ideal environment to listen to your music? [continue reading…]

The infamous Leeds quartet Aviaries unleashed two fantastic new tracks. Ribbons and its b-side Bermuda. Both brilliant and energetic indie/electronic pop songs. I really don’t get why they haven’t become super popular yet, a really really special sound. Need to see them live asap. On a sidenote: the Poule d’Or in-house graphics department felt really honoured when Aviaries asked us to help them out with their artwork a little bit. Thanks for choosing Poule d’Or! Also you may have caught Aviaries opening Poule d’Or 7 back in March.

After a couple of EPs in the past years, german electropoppers Dadajugend Polyform have now released their debut LP Louis de Marsalle on Auf Die Plätze Records. While there are a whole lot of bands trying to sound like they are from the 80s, Dadajugend achieve something more creative here. Louis de Marsalle still has that distinctive poppy 80s feel to it, but on tracks like Localism Leeds you can feel that there is more than that to it. A modern twist that maybe only shows after a couple of listens. Overall, Lena, Holger and Enno have put together a very nice debut album that should be very entertaining on stage. They are giving away A Fair Trade along with remixed versions for free on soundcloud. Sadly Localism Leeds is not available for stream. It is now. Louis de Marsalle is out now. Also catch them on Poule d’Or 2.
